Job Description

Position Location: This position will be based in ACT’s New York City office.

Reports to: Director of Immigration Legal Services

FLSA Status: Hourly - Non-exempt

Employment Type: Part-time, contract position; potential for eventual conversion to a full time, permanent position based on organizational needs.

Hours: 12 hours per week in person; specific schedule to be set with the supervisor.

Salary: The hourly pay is $25.00; additional compensation is negotiable based on experience.

Since its founding, ACT has supported thousands of African immigrants with direct services, trained hundreds of new leaders, and led successful policy campaigns at the federal, state, and local levels that have impacted hundreds of thousands of immigrants. ACT’s African immigrant membership comes from a diverse range of nationalities, cultures, and languages, is religiously diverse, and is predominantly working-class and low-income. We have offices in New York City, Philadelphia, and the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Position Description:

ACT is seeking a dedicated project coordinator with demonstrated experience working with diverse cultural groups to join our legal team in our NY Chapter. This position plays an integral part in providing support for legal services programming in the provision of legal services for their resettlement journey. The Project Coordinator will report to the Director of Immigration Legal Services.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Works closely with the Data Manager
  • Serves as case database expert for the team, including running weekly and monthly reports
  • Coordinates program's accurate, timely, and fulsome data maintenance.
  • Serves as point of contact on the team for legal data management, data systems, and data integrity.
  • Manages client referral systems; coordinates and maintains intake waitlist; assigns intakes to be completed by other staff.
  • Assists with updating clients’ contact information in case file, case management database, and with required courts and agencies under attorney supervision.
  • Maintains file and case management database with updates on case status.
  • Oversees case file closing procedures and assists with case closures.
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to administrative duties of the office, mail, supplies, and related tasks

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree 
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with immigrants and/or vulnerable populations.
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with legal databases and managing dockets; experience with LollyLaw preferred.
  • Experience working in an office setting is preferred.
  • Committed to practicing and supporting wellbeing and a work-home life balance. 
  • Experience working and communicating in a remote environment is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population of clients in terms of age, economic status, and cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Experience in trauma-informed care is desirable.
  • Possesses problem-solving skills and empathy, and is a solution-oriented team player.
  • Experience and cultural competence with African immigrant communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. You can build strong working relationships with members and external partners, organizations, and consultants.
  • Ability to succeed in a “startup” environment, including accountability to goals, ability to work independently, take on multiple roles, and prioritize tasks.
  • Digital literacy and proficiency with technology, including Microsoft Office suite and Google Workspace products (Gmail, Google Docs, etc.). 
  • Proficiency in English is required. Fluency in French, Arabic, and/or other widely spoken African languages is preferred.
  • A passion for ACT’s mission and demonstrated commitment to community-centered immigrant justice.
